History

The Kalama Safe Community Coalition (KSCC) was born from the Kalama Town Hall meeting on March 23, 2010 and appointed by Mayor Pete Poulson. The original individuals commissioned by the Mayor were Mike Hamilton and Tina Day. Police Chief Bruce Hall joined this original group at the next meeting and the Coalition was off and running.

From that Town Hall meeting this coalition has grown into a grass roots group driven to reduce substance abuse among Kalama youth. The coalition consists of a variety of individuals including parents, students, Kalama Police Dept., Kalama School District, City Council, Cowlitz Substance Abuse Coalition and small business owners in Kalama.

The early months were spent putting the nuts and bolts together of reaching our community and providing a service and support that would add value to the Kalama as a whole. Our name was developed and our mission statement was written. The coalition has initiated and/or participated in a variety of opportunities over the past 20+ months, including creation of a prescription drop off sight, Let's Draw the Line Campaign, Strengthening Families Program, National Red Ribbon Campaign, all with the goal of focusing on the positive but addressing the issues.

Our Goals for 2011/2012 are to increase community participation in the coalition and provide Kalama with the KARES Program. KARES is a community event designed to support parents and students, on detecting drug use and abuse and addressing the community's needs to find real solutions with real providers. Another goal for KSCC was to bring the Red Ribbon Campaign to Kalama and we (Kalama) were very successful. The Middle/High School participated as the City of Kalama and many of our local business.

KSCC is only just beginning but our community and our families are invested and involved! Join us and together, WE will make a difference.

We are the mighty KALAMA CHINOOKS - We love our town and we are proud of our kids!
