My child just got in trouble at school for a drug/alcohol/dangerous activity:

• I have been told my child needs an assessment, what exactly does that mean?

This means that you will need to contact a substance abuse treatment provider and arrange for an appointment for your child. An assessment is a tool that helps professionals gather important information and history to get the right help for those who need it.

• After an assessment, what happens next?

Following the assessment you can expect to receive information on the level and type of support and care that your youth needs. This may mean that they receive a recommendation to attend local support groups, education only classes, outpatient substance abuse treatment, or they may be referred to an inpatient facility. The substance abuse professional will provide you with the information you need to make the most appropriate and healthy choice for your youth. This recommendation will also be provided to the school administrator and school intervention/prevention specialist so they can help you give your youth the best and most cohesive support.
